Hello class,
Here are a few definitions I found for imagery:
Imagery
- Visually descriptive or figurative language, esp. in a literary work
- The use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas
- the ability to form mental images of things or events
Imagery can be used in poetry in a lot of different ways. A few poetic literary devices used to create imagery are simile, metaphor, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and personification.
Simile: A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind using "like" or "as" (e.g., as brave as a lion).
Metaphor: A figure of speech in which an implicit comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common that does not use "like" or "as" (The mountain was a giant in a world of tiny people).
Alliteration: The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.(Sally sat singing on the seashore tossing seashells).
Hyperbole: A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect; an extravagant statement. (I'm so hungry I could eat a giraffe!).
Onomatopoeia - The use of words which imitate sound (BAM, SMACK, PLOP!).
Personification - A figure of speech which endows inanimate objects with human traits or abilities (The letter waltzed through my mind).
ASSIGNMENT 1
Reply to this blog post and rewrite the definitions of imagery IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Below this definition, also use at least 3 of the literary devices listed above in a sentence. Sign your name at the end of the post. An example reply would look like this:
